Seldom have I read a book that so captured me verbally and visually, thrust me into an old tradition in so many ways, and also knocked out any resistance to a tradition (Stations of the Cross) that otherwise might be foreign to me. This book is a rich resource for preacher and teacher, but, above all, a rare gift, a Spirit-gift, to all of us, pilgrims on the way. The Stations of the Cross are ‘not just a Catholic thing,’ as one person reminded me when I was prompted to identify what I was reading. It is a Christian ‘thing,’ the witnessing (as if for the first time, the historic time) the journey that Christ bore or endured for all of us. We see Jesus at his ultimate humanity (he truly grasps what humanity means for us) so that Christ, the truly divine, is the true and only Savior for us. Haney writes powerful dialogues, words unfolding as story, scripture, sacred voice and prayer, for the reader . . . [He] takes the minimal references in scripture and transforms them into their own chapters, episodes or events that speak of Christ, but also speak TO us. We meet Christ as Savior and friend, seeing him and in him the pathway to our eternal presence Christ offers us through his ministry. Words are pictures. Pictures are words. I have known Michael McGrath for years. Wild and fun, a great friend, he is also one of the few who can truly ‘preach’ through strokes of a pen or brush, a color, a word, a nuance in texture or shaping that helps us ‘see’ as we are then invited to live. The sketches, ink drawings in black and white . . . stark, real, simple, yet filled with the color of Christ. I read the pages and skip the picture, then I see the picture and, for a time, the words are silent. The pictures are their own words. The pictures need to be transferred from the pages of the book to the pages of our hearts, along with parish newsletters, bulletins and other artistic expressions in our church places and spaces. The sketches, and the words, will go far beyond the Stations of the Cross and Lent to the whole of who we are and what we are in God’s love and care. Use this book as your Lenten reading. Give it as a gift. Pick it out as part of your summer reading. It will speak to you over and over again.
