Charles Latham Gaines III died of natural causes on July 21, 2026, after a short illness. He was born January 6, 1942, in Jacksonville, Florida to Margaret Shook Gaines of Birmingham, Alabama, and Charles Latham Gaines Jr. The family soon moved to Birmingham, and Charles attended Mountain Brook Grammar School, Indian Springs School, and Birmingham University School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Birmingham Southern College, and a Master of Fine Arts degree, also cum laude, from the University of Iowa’s Creative Writing Workshop. While at Birmingham Southern, he met the love of his life, Patricia Ellisor, and they were married in 1963.

Pursuing his career as a writer and hers as a painter and sculptor, Charles and Patricia lived in Georgia, Ireland, Iowa, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, and Nova Scotia, as well as Alabama. Since 2003, they divided the year between homes in Monastery, Nova Scotia and Argo, Alabama.

During a long and varied writing career, Charles published 25 books, among them the novels, Stay Hungry, a finalist for the National Book Award, Dangler, Survival Games, and the forthcoming The Passions of Saint Francis; the non-fiction New York Times and international bestseller, Pumping Iron; and the memoir, A Family Place. The book Pumping Iron and a later film of the same title written and narrated by Charles, are widely credited for having introduced both bodybuilding and Arnold Schwarzenegger to the general public. He also wrote the scripts for two produced feature films, two award-winning feature-documentaries, and a 2-hour PBS adaptation of Edith Wharton’s “Summer,” as well as numerous segments for ABC’s “American Sportsman,” a show for which he also directed and produced. For his television writing he was the recipient of two Emmys, and two Cine Golden Eagle Awards.

Over more than 60 years of magazine writing, Charles published articles and stories in Harpers, GEO, Sports Illustrated, Town & Country, Architectural Digest, Audubon, Forbes Life, Esquire, Men’s Journal, Playboy, Garden & Gun, Field and Stream, Sports Afield, Southern Living, among many other periodicals, and was a Contributing Editor to a number of those magazines.

A lifelong sportsman and outdoors adventurer, he was at various times during his life a dedicated wing-shooter and bird-dog trainer, a rock and ice climber, a ski instructor and winter mountaineer, a canoeist and small boat sailor, a certified diver, a (bad) bull rider, bungee-jumper, and skydiver. He was also, with Hayes Noel and Bob Gurnsey, co-inventor of the game of Paintball, co-founder of the first Paintball company, a recipient of the Paintball Lifetime Achievement Award, and an inductee into the Paintball Hall of Fame.

His favorite outdoors activity was fly-fishing, which he was fortunate enough to practice all over the world, in over 25 countries and on five continents, and his two collections of essays on the sport, The Next Valley Over and Waters Far and Near are considered to be among the best American books of that genre. He was a founding member of the US Fly Fishing Team and fished as a member of that team in World Championship Fly Fishing Competitions in New Zealand and Tasmania.

He was a Lifetime Board Member of the US Fly Fishing Team, and a US Director and National Council member of the Atlantic Salmon Federation. He was named a Distinguished Alumnus by both The Altamont School (formerly Birmingham University School) and Birmingham Southern College, and he taught periodically as an Associate Professor in the Graduate Creative Writing Program at Spalding University in Louisville, KY. In 2018 he was inducted into the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame and was the 2020 recipient of the Truman Capote Prize for lifetime achievement in non-fiction. In 2026 he was awarded the prestigious Heritage Award by the Museum of American Fly Fishing for lifetime contribution to that sport and to fishery conservation.

Charles is survived by his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Patricia Ellisor Gaines; his three children, Latham, Greta, and Shelby Gaines; five grandchildren: Cassidy and Ryder Haje, and Lucy Bo, Belle, and Rose Gaines; and by his sister, Hansell Burke and her boys, Monte, Justin, and Chris.

EXCITING FAITH AND SCIENCE CONFERENCE CONCEPT

June 5, 2022

PRESS RELEASE

Conferences offered on “faith and science” are often siloed by denomination and discipline, thus missing their asymptotic (close) convergence. The Faith and Science Conference Enhanced by Art and Interfaith Mysticism sponsored by Houston-based Contemplative Network (CN) and Londonbased Scientific and Medical Network (SMN) are combining these subjects in a unique gathering. The theme is A Journey into God’s Mystical Love. Our goal is to show how faith and current science reinforce each other and encourage respectful dialogue between laity, clergy, scientists and medical professionals. The Conference is scheduled in Rome, Italy, Friday – Sunday, December 11-13, 2026.

We are excited to announce our keynote speakers are world renowned scientists, two of whom studied under Nobel Laureates. Their presentations will transition between: physics to creation, chemistry to life, biology to consciousness, and psychology to mysticism. Each day will begin with clergy from a different Abrahamic faith tradition sharing their approach to interfaith Centering Prayer. As Fr. Thomas Keating frequently said, “In the silence, there is no dogma.” The final session will discuss neuroscientific research on improved quality-of-life from practicing interfaith Centering Prayer. Offsite art will be offered as tangible visions of the day’s topics, such as the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam. Pending his availability, Pope Leo XIV will open the conference with a special audience.

Please join us for this exciting, unique, informative faith and science conference with presentations targeted to an interfaith audience of non-scientists and non-theologians. For more information and to register for this first regularly scheduled conference, visit www.faith-science.org.

Press Release Pendergast

June 5, 2022

https://herderandherder.com/pendergast-series/

June 15, 2022. Releasing e-Editions — In collaboration with a private foundation Herder & Herder Publishers is launching a landmark initiative for the development of a Christian cosmology based on reality as process, to replace the medieval static worldview.

The initiative began last fall 2021, with the publication of the first of six volumes by physicist and theologian Richard J. Pendergast, SJ: THE COSMIC HIERARCHY. God’s Plan for the Evolution of the Universe. This volume offers an introduction to a Christian cosmology, seeking the integration of modern science and divine revelation, with the aim of achieving a meaningful view of the universe.  His May of 2022 the e-editions of both volumes will e released.

Combining notions from science, philosophy, and theology, Pendergast weaves a coherent picture of what we know about reality. He considers the nature of matter, human consciousness, quantum mechanics, biological evolution, and the problem of evil. Addressing both believers and nonbelievers, he aims to offer insight into problems that may disturb the faith of the former or impede the latter’s search for God.

The publication of Pendergast’s six volume Christian Cosmology initiates a much-needed program of evangelization, including education and research, aimed especially at challenging and supporting younger generations.

Msgr. Stuart W. Swetland, STD, president of Donnelly College in Kansas, was offered and has assumed leadership of the initiative.

Bishop Asztrik Várszegi, OSB, archabbot em. of Pannonhalma, Hungary, aided with counsel in the preparations, and continues as its episcopal patron. He was instrumental in presenting the books to Pope Francis through the ambassador of Hungary to the Holy See, asking that the Holy Father support the evangelization initiative by two actions: Issue a formal teaching on evolution and update the teaching on the Eucharist, for which a modern theory is proposed in volume 6.

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR A CHRISTIAN COSMOLOGY

“I have examined the first and the sixth volume you have graciously sent me and I am happy that Professor Valerie Miké will be able to present them to the Holy Father. I believe this initiative will celebrate the efforts of Fr. Richard J. Pendergast, S.J. (1927-2012), a scientist and man of God, who genuinely and honestly tried to seek the integration of modern science and divine revelation.”

-GIANFRANCO CARDINAL RAVASI, President, Pontifical Council for Culture

“The relation between modern science and a modern Christian theology is one of the most important tasks for today’s theology. Following the inspiring paths of Teilhard de Chardin and working on a high academic level Richard J. Pendergast SJ gives an outstanding example with his significant contributions to this field.”

CHRISTOPH CARDINAL SCHOENBORN, OP, Archbishop of Vienna, Austria

“The call of Benedict in the beginning in Europe is echoed as Richard Pendergast proclaims the light of Christ to the modern world.”

BISHOP ASZTRIK VÁRSZEGI, OSB, Historian, Archabbot Emeritus of

Pannonhalma, Hungary

“These [books] are most impressive and I am delighted to have read them. I hope they do a great deal of good once they are formally published along with the other volumes.”

-MICHAEL J. REISS, Professor of Science Education. UCL Institute of Education, London

“A hundred years ago Teilhard de Chardin had a Christian vision of the world in the light of evolution. Following him, Richard Pendergast began the task of systematic analysis to reflect the vision that he shared, in order to help show the way in humanity’s search for God.”

BISHOP ATTILA MIKLÓSHÁZY, SJ, Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology,

Toronto School of Theology

“In our age, science is revealing to us, even more, the true grandeur of God’s design. Writing in the spirit of Pope St. John Paul II’s teaching on science, philosophy, and theology in a common quest for understanding, Richard Pendergast undertook the development of a Christian cosmology based on reality as process, to replace the medieval static worldview. This is the fascinating lifetime work of a Catholic priest-scientist, an original thinker who has opened pathways for generations to follow and explore.

While there may be other approaches, Fr. Pendergast’s desire to synthesize faith and reason, theology and science, to speak in a language intelligible to our technological age, is to be admired and emulated. His work is a must-read for anyone who wishes to evangelize the scientifically literate generations now being formed.”

MSGR. STUART W. SWETLAND, STD, President of Donnelly College, Kansas,

Commentator on religious issues on national radio and television. Academic degrees in theology (Pontifical Lateran University), physics (US Naval Academy), philosophy and economics (Oxford).

On June 15, 2022, Herder & Herder Publishers launched a groundbreaking initiative to develop a Christian cosmology rooted in the dynamic nature of reality, moving beyond outdated medieval models toward a vision that embraces science, theology, and philosophy in harmony. This effort centers on the six-volume work of Jesuit physicist and theologian Richard J. Pendergast, beginning with The Cosmic Hierarchy: God’s Plan for the Evolution of the Universe, which integrates modern scientific understanding—such as quantum mechanics, biological evolution, and consciousness—with divine revelation to offer a coherent, meaningful worldview. Aimed at both believers and seekers, the series addresses profound questions about existence, evil, and purpose, providing intellectual and spiritual resources for a new generation navigating faith in a scientific age.

Endorsed by leading figures like Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi and Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, and guided by Msgr. Stuart W. Swetland, this project includes plans for education, research, and evangelization, with Bishop Asztrik Várszegi advocating for its recognition at the highest levels of the Church, including a formal papal teaching on evolution. Just as this initiative encourages informed dialogue between faith and reason, individuals managing health concerns today benefit from access to trusted information about Strattera Generic therapy, where clarity and medical guidance support responsible decision-making in complex personal journeys.

June 15, 2022. Releasing e-Editions — In collaboration with a private foundation Herder & Herder Publishers is launching a landmark initiative for the development of a Christian cosmology based on reality as process, to replace the medieval static worldview.

On June 15, 2022, Herder & Herder Publishers launched a significant initiative with the release of e-editions from the Christian Cosmology series by physicist and theologian Richard J. Pendergast, SJ, in collaboration with a private foundation. This landmark project seeks to replace the medieval static view of the universe with a dynamic, process-oriented Christian cosmology that integrates modern science—such as evolution, quantum mechanics, and consciousness studies—with theological insight. Rooted in both faith and reason, the series aims to offer a coherent vision of reality that speaks to believers and seekers alike, fostering deeper understanding of God’s ongoing creative action in the world.

By engaging topics like the nature of matter, the emergence of life, and the problem of evil, Pendergast provides a framework for reconciling divine revelation with scientific discovery in a way that is accessible and intellectually rigorous. Just as this effort encourages thoughtful dialogue between science and spirituality, individuals navigating personal health concerns benefit from informed discussions—such as consulting a urologist about Tadalafil therapy—where medical expertise guides responsible decision-making.
